Il brano scritto da Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie e prodotto da Quincy Jones, è diventato un simbolo di speranza, una melodia capace di unire culture e generazioni sotto il segno della solidarietà.

Nata dall’iniziativa di Harry Belafonte, la canzone fu registrata in una sola notte il 28 gennaio 1985 agli A&M Studios di Los Angeles, con un cast stellare che includeva alcune delle voci più iconiche della storia della musica. Fu registrata di notte perché era difficile riuscire a riunire un numero così ampio di artisti. Ma l'impresa, con l'impegno di tutti, riuscì. Si colse l’occasione degli American Music Awards, che quell’anno erano presentati proprio da Lionel Richie, per riunirsi tutti insieme, dopo l’evento, agli A&M Recording Studios di Hollywood.

L’intento era semplice quanto ambizioso: raccogliere fondi per combattere la fame in Etiopia, ispirandosi al progetto britannico Band Aid e alla loro “Do They Know It’s Christmas”. Il risultato fu un successo senza precedenti: 20 milioni di copie vendute nel mondo, 4 Grammy Awards, 80 milioni di dollari raccolti per aiuti umanitari e un’eredità musicale che ancora oggi risuona con forza.

Dietro alla magia della canzone, si nasconde una delle sessioni di registrazione più incredibili di sempre. “Lasciate l’ego fuori dalla porta”, si leggeva all’ingresso dello studio: un monito necessario quando si ha a che fare con 46 superstar della musica mondiale. La lavorazione fu intensa e piena di momenti memorabili: Cyndi Lauper temeva che la sua voce troppo squillante potesse rovinare il pezzo, ma il suo intervento divenne tra i più iconici; Bob Dylan, spaesato, venne aiutato da Stevie Wonder che gli mostrò, con un’imitazione, come interpretare al meglio la sua parte.
